Cisco Service Provider Video Segment Grows 12% in Fiscal 2016

Cisco announced its 2016 fiscal year results for the twelve months ending July 30, 2016.  In its financial reporting Cisco breaks out the results of its Service Provider Video (“SPV”) product segment. Cisco_logo

With Cisco’s divestiture of its CPE business to Technicolor, the SPV segment reporting offers greater visibility into Cisco’s products targeted to media customers.  Those product categories span Cable Access Products, Cloud-based video solutions, Content Security, Content Management and Distribution Products, Digital Headend, and Virtualized Video Processing Systems.

Many of these product categories were acquired in a series of M&A transactions in the media technology sector including 1 Mainstream (2015), NDS (2012), BNI Video (2011), Inlet (2011), Extend Media (2010), and Scientific Atlanta (2005).

When excluding revenues from the divested CPE business, the SPV segment had revenues of $1,920 million for the 2016 fiscal year, an increase of 12% over the 2015 fiscal year.  As a percentage of Cisco’s total product sales (not including services revenue), SPV represented 5.2% in FY2016 and 4.7% in FY2015.

The 2016 fiscal year results benefited from an especially strong second quarter driven by sales of video solutions and cable access products in China.

Fiscal Fourth Quarter 2016 Results:

For the fiscal fourth quarter, Cisco’s SPV segment had revenue of $444 million, a decline of 12% versus the fourth quarter of 2015.  SPV accounted for 4.6% of Cisco’s product revenue in the fourth quarter, a decline versus the contribution of 5.3% in the fourth quarter 2015.

Again, the above figures only include revenues for the continuing operations of the SPV segment.

 

Update on Cisco’s Broader Activities in Media Technology Sector

Not captured in the SPV segment are the sales of Cisco’s general-purpose technologies such as switchers and blade servers in the media sector.  Cisco has been an active contributor to the virtualization and IP transition efforts in the media technology industry.

Cisco’s CTO of Engineering and Chief Architect Dave Ward gave a presentation as part of the ImagineLIVE Power Sessions at the 2016 NAB Show.  During the presentation, Mr. Ward reviewed Cisco’s perspectives on the future of technology architecture in the media sector and Cisco’s role in that architecture.

When referring to the above slide, Mr. Ward offered background on the high-level focus of Cisco in the media sector. “The target that we have for the industry and the target that we work on with Imagine is actually all at the top layer.  At the top layer creating a Media Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) where a media workflow engineer – or any independent part of those workflows – those engineers can focus on doing their jobs and the stack and the network can take care of themselves” said Mr. Ward.

Later in the presentation Mr. Ward provided a more detailed review of the technology architecture supporting the Media PaaS target along with an overview of where Cisco’s technology would fit into that architecture.

The blue line in the above slide represents the divide between where Cisco will focus and where Cisco will partner with other vendors – in this instance with Imagine.  As stated by Mr. Ward, “Imagine’s job is everything above that layer [blue bar] and what I’m trying to build is everything below that. A self- managing orchestrated reactive system that can allocate resources, can engineer admission control into an IP datacenter and across the WAN, and make it all as easy as possible.”

We have been publishing the BBS Reports since 2009.  Each new edition is created through several months of research, including interviews with technology end-users, global surveys of technology decision makers, analysis of the end-user responses, and visualization of the data collected.  Now in its eighth year of publication, the BBS remains the most comprehensive annual study of technology end-users in the global broadcast and media technology industry.  Nearly 10,000 technology professionals in 100+ countries participate in the BBS each year, making it the largest market study of the media technology industry.

Based on feedback from technology vendors, media companies, and investors, we have updated the vendors, product categories, and market trends profiled in the 2016 BBS to better align with recent market developments.

Select updates include the global tracking of IP Standard Adoption, a product level review of the 4K upgrade cycle, and planned usage of programmatic advertising exchanges.

NAB Devoncroft 2015 Shifting Media Economics Session Announcement

 

Now part of the NAB 2015 Media Finance and Investor Conference, “Shifting Media Economics: Impact on Strategy, Finance, and Technology,” will be held on Sunday April 12, 2015 in room N235 of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Designed to be a thought-provoking kickoff to the 2015 NAB Show, this half-day conference examines the “the business of the media business” from the perspective of all levels of the media value chain. It includes panel discussions featuring C-level executives from leading broadcasters, service providers, technology vendors, and private equity investors. Each group will offer a candid assessment of how their respective business models, operational practices, and strategic decision making have been impacted by the dramatic shift in media industry economics.

The keynote, “The Future of TV. One Man’s Opinion.” will be delivered by Bob Bowman, President, Business & Media of Major League Baseball (MLB), who oversees MLB Advanced Media (MLBAM) and MLB Network.

MLBAM has been involved with several recent high-profile streaming events including WrestleMania 31, the opening day of Major League Baseball, the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament, and the recent launch of HBO Now.  Bowman is scheduled to take the stage just one hour before the highly anticipated season 5 premiere of “Game of Thrones” becomes available via HBO Now.

Arista Networks Files for $200 Million IPO

IP switching vendor Arista Network has filed for an IPO and plans to raise as much as $200m.

The company has garnered a great deal of attention from leading broadcast technologists because one of its products enables frame-accurate switching of uncompressed HD-SDI video over IP (SMPTE 2022-6).

Arista, whose core customers are high-speed financial traders and cloud computing firms, had revenue of $361.2m in 2013, up 87% versus the previous year, and its net income doubled to $42.5m.

Based on these results, it’s clear that the company is aiming for data center and financial clients rather than the much smaller broadcast routing switcher market.

Nevertheless, Arista has made friends in high places in the broadcast world.

At the annual SMPTE technical conference in October 2013, Artista founder Andy Bechtolsheim co-presented a paper with Thomas Edwards, VP of Engineering & Development at FOX NE&O called “Video Processing in an FPGA-enabled Ethernet Switch,” which described how Fox has tested Arista’s product in its lab.  Although Bechtolsheim was careful to note that the demonstration was a proof-of-concept rather than a product, Edwards said that Arista products showed great promise, by performing extremely well and not dropping a single packet.

At the time of the 2013 SMPTE conference, Edwards said “FOX NE&O believes that professional media networking is the future of the broadcast plant, including the networked transport of our uncompressed high-definition live video streams. We believe that converging our video streams onto the Ethernet infrastructure will provide enhanced agility and flexibility to our business, and also it may potentially bring savings by allowing us to purchase more COTS hardware and thus benefit from economies of scale. The broadcast industry is at a very early point in this technological transition, so FOX NE&O greatly values Arista Networks’ contribution to this proof-of-concept to help test out some of the basic video processing requirements of professional media networks.”

Fox is not the only proponent of moving towards a truly IP-based infrastructure, governed by software defined networking (SDN). Indeed this shift may be one of the biggest technology trends over the next 5+ years, and bring major changes to the industry as a result.

Last month Eric Wolf, VP Technology Strategy at PBS told the audience at the HPA Technology Retreat that his company’s new disaster recovery center that’s based completely on virtualized IT systems, along with “little bits” of traditional broadcast gear.  Although this new facility is not yet based on SDN or cloud enabled, it’s the first step on the path.  DR is a great test facility so it’s a positive step along the way, “but as we look at our next big playout system, the big question on the table is whether we can go all IP for all the routing in the plant and the suspicion is that we can.”

Speaking at the same event, Fox NE&O EVP and GM Richard Friedel said IP is “well along the way towards becoming real. We do have IP-based routers in our plant today, and IP technology is just going to proliferate.  If you walk into any of our equipment rooms at the moment, there is almost no classic broadcast vendor anymore. Instead you’ll see rows of Hewlett Packard, IBM, and Cisco. We’re really in an all-IP world now. We’ve got huge virtualization farms already and this is coming. In five years no one will build a plant of our size that’s not based on IP concepts.”

But it’s not just IT companies who are pushing software defined networking.  Traditional broadcast vendors are also embracing SDN and applying it to the broadcast infrastructure.

Last week Imagine Communications (formerly Harris Broadcast) introduced MultiService SDN, which the company says is “a SDN framework that creates a fully virtualized network fabric for deploying advanced services, and enables the video bit flow to be software-mapped, simplifying the network architecture of media companies operating in hybrid environments with both baseband and IP workflows.”

Another notable example of this trend include a Silicon Valley start-up called SDVI, led by Omneon co-founder Larry Kaplan, who said last year that the focus of his new company is to bring SDN technology to the broadcast industry.

Belgium-based SDNsquare, whose CEO and co-founder, Lieven Vermale, is the former Director of Technology and Innovation at the European Broadcasting Union, is another start-up operating in this area.

One important group in the transition to IP-based broadcasting is the EBU-SMPTE-VSF Task Force on Networked Media (JT-NM), a cross-industry group of broadcasters and technology vendors working to define the future of the all-IP broadcast facility. Belden Makes it Official – Combination of Grass Valley and Miranda to be Called Grass Valley

One day after Belden completed its $220m acquisition of Grass Valley, the company has officially revealed that the combined company will be called Grass Valley.

The company branding combines Grass Valley’s “GV” script and Miranda’s trademark, purple ellipse.

Harris Broadcast Splits into Two Standalone Companies, Drops Harris Name, Brings Back Gates

Harris Broadcast CEO Charlie Vogt told a crowd of broadcast industry customers, press, and analysts that company has split itself into two separate businesses, Imagine Communications and GatesAir.

Vogt, who made the announcement at the company’s first Media Day, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City, will be CEO of both companies.

Under the new corporate structure, the Harris Broadcast portfolio of radio and TV broadcast transmission products are now part of GatesAir, and the rest of the company’s product line-up are part of Imagine Communications.  The split is effective immediately, and the companies will have separate booths at the upcoming NAB 2014 tradeshow.

The part of the business that is now Imagine Communications will be headquartered in Vogt’s hometown of Dallas, and will have offices in Denver, Toronto, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv and Beijing.

GatesAir will be headquartered in will be headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will operate manufacturing, supply chain and customer fulfillment in Quincy, Illinois.

Although the announcement marks the end of the Harris name of the broadcast industry after more than half a century, it also marks the re-entrance of the Gates name.  Founded in 1922, Gates Radio was acquired by Harris Corporation in 1957, and became the Harris transmission division.  With the use of the Gates name for its new company, the Harris Broadcast transmission business has come full-circle. The grandson of Gates Radio founder Parker Gates was on hand at the event and said the family was pleased by the news.

Following the announcement of the new structure, Vogt and Imagine Communications CTO Steve Reynolds outlined a bold vision for the company’s future.

On the GatesAir side, Chief Product Officer Rich Redmond described how the company is meeting the growing demand for wireless delivery of audio, video, and multimedia content.

Broadcast Vendor M&A: Harris Broadcast Completes Acquisition of Imagine Communications

Harris Broadcast (HBC) has completed the acquisition of Imagine Communications, a provider of high density adaptive bitrate compression and transcoding products for the service provider market. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Privately held Imagine, which has raised $34.7m in venture funding since its inception, currently counts many of the top North America cable MSOs and telco operators as its customers. The majority of Imagine’s revenue currently comes from cable operators in North America, and HBC plans to expand this by selling Imagine’s products through its global sales channel.

According to Brian Cabeceiras, chief strategy officer at Harris Broadcast, a total of 32 employees and 4 contractors will join Harris Broadcast from Imagine.  This includes Imagine’s CTO Ron Gutman, the entire R&D team, the VP of Engineering, and key sales and service staff in North America.

When I first read about this deal last month, it seemed to me that Imagine is in a different business than HBC. Imagine sells high density transcoding appliances to pay TV operators (a very competitive space with several well-entrenched players), whereas Harris Broadcast develops equipment sold into broadcast engineering and operations environments.  These are different markets with different customers, business models, and competitive environments.

I contacted Cabeceiras, and asked him about the rationale for the deal, and whether the acquisition signifies a more broad-based move by HBC into the service provider market.

Cabeceiras made the point that “HBC already has a strong presence in Cable MSO’s via our Landmark Traffic, Scheduling, Ad Sales product where we see tight integration with Imagine Communications.”

He also highlighted that under new CEO Charlie Vogt, Harris Broadcast is a rapidly evolving company, and that Imagine is a good fit for both where HBC is today, and where it sees itself moving over time.  “Charlie and the management team will oversee a range of strategic development and investments in core Harris Broadcast platforms designed to speed innovation and a customer-first approach. Our roadmaps will advance our leadership in emerging market trends such as IP, Virtualization, Cloud, OTT, TV Everywhere, and 4K. As exemplified by Imagine, acquisitions are among the range of options a company has and will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.”

As a veteran of the telecom industry, Vogt has likely seen similar technology transitions and he clearly intends to make good use of this perspective in his role at HBC. Vogt has made no secret of his belief that HBC must aggressively move its portfolio in the direction of software defined networks and a virtualized broadcast infrastructure in order to support the company’s customer base as they move towards new business models that focus on multi-screen delivery and monetization.

With this context in mind, Cabeceiras says Imagine is both a “strong fit in HBC’s core broadcast and media markets as our customers add OTT services and targeted advertising,” and also as provides the foundation for entering the cable MSO/telco market by providing a ready-made customer base facilitated by “strong product for Cable MSO with validated best-of-industry picture quality.”

But most importantly,Cabeceiras says HBC believes that the acquisition of Imagine “fits HBC’s TV Everywhere and MultiService SDN grand strategy,” which includes building “the first true ‘MultiService SDN’ (Software Defined Network), integrating sales, scheduling, automation, playout and delivery throughout both linear and non-linear content distribution networks, utilizing cutting edge software breakthroughs that run in high density, low power commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and blade-server environments, consistent with HBC’s vision of software-centric, virtualized operations.”

“TV Everywhere is the future of our industry, and our customers are vigorously pursuing this path to expand their business models and improve the monetization of content across any screen,” said Vogt in a statement about the deal. “The advanced Adaptive Bit Rate (ABR) technology created by Imagine combines quality, density and a small footprint to greatly leapfrog anything else on the market today and improves transcoding economics up to a factor of 10 over competing alternatives. Our content creator and content distribution customers, including cable, MSO and telecommunications service providers, will benefit significantly from end-to-end portfolio integration that establishes a clear pathway to linear and non-linear viewing parity across every screen.”
