Apr 03 2012

I am pleased to announce that the 2012 Big Broadcast Survey (BBS), our annual study of the broadcast market, has been completed and that the reports from this project will be published soon.

We once again had record-breaking participation in this project.   Almost 10,000 broadcast professionals in 100+ countries participated in the 2012 BBS, making it the largest ever and most comprehensive market study of the broadcast industry.  We are humbled by and grateful for the unprecedented participation from so broadcast industry professionals who took the time to contribute to this year’s study.

The 2012 BBS offers unique insight into the broadcast industry by providing information about industry trends, budgets, capital projects, HD and file-based upgrade cycles, and more. It also provides detailed brand data on more than 100 broadcast technology vendors in 30+ product categories (see list in post tags below).

We created the BBS to help our clients, and readers of this website, better understand the issues and trends impacting the broadcast and digital media industries.  We received many positive comments about the BBS from both participants and our research clients, so we feel that we are on the right track and we will continue to publish data about the market on a regular basis.

We will begin to post summary data from the 2012 study on this website, so please check back regularly.

I will also be presenting a summary of the 2012 data on Sunday April 15th at the NAB Show, at a half-day conference session called Media Technology: Strategy and Valuation, which is being produced by Devoncroft, Silverwood Partners and the NAB Show.  It’s free for all registered NAB Show attendees, so please come along.

More Broadcast Vendor M&A: Semtech Completes C$500 Million Acquisition of Gennum

Broadcast Vendor M&A | Posted by Joe Zaller
Mar 20 2012

Semtech announced that it has completed the acquisition of Gennum for C$13.55 per share, or approximately C$500 million. The acquisition was financed with a combination of cash from Semtech’s international cash reserves and C$350 million of five-year secured term loans.

Semtech estimates that the acquisition will result in at least C$15m in annual cost synergies by 2014, and will be accretive to non-GAAP earnings.

“Combining Gennum’s 1 Gbps to 25 Gbps signal integrity solutions with Semtech’s 40 Gbps to 100 Gbps SerDes solutions creates one of the industry’s most complete and robust analog and mixed signal portfolios targeted at the communications and enterprise computing segments,” said Mohan Maheswaran, President and Chief Executive Officer of Semtech Corporation. “This will enable us to help customers reduce bottlenecks in the access, metro and core networks, as demand for bandwidth continues to escalate. Moreover, Gennum’s strong position in video broadcast and the emerging HD video surveillance market further diversifies Semtech’s portfolio of high-performance analog semiconductors.”

Following the completion of the acquisition, Gennum Corporation has become Semtech Canada Inc. The shares of Gennum are expected to be delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange by March 26, 2012, and Gennum will cease to be a reporting issuer under applicable Canadian securities laws as soon as practicable.

More Broadcast Vendor M&A: Gennum Acquires Nanotech Semiconductor for $34m

Broadcast Vendor M&A | Posted by Joe Zaller
Apr 07 2011

Gennum Corporation, a provider of semiconductors to the broadcast and digital media industries announced that it has acquired Nanotech Semiconductor, a fabless IC company specializing in advanced CMOS mixed-signal ICs for fiber optic communications, for $34m in cash. Gennum also agreed to pay Nanotech’s investors up to an additional $6m if Nanotech achieves revenue of $12m – $14m over the next 12 months.

Nanotech’s 2010 revenue was $7.4m, which means that the company achieved a 4.6x revenue valuation as part of the deal.  However Nanotech is growing rapidly. Gennum says that Nanotech has achieved sales of approximately $1m per month in 2011.

Gennum says that the deal will benefit the company in a number of ways, including increased market presence, a highly differentiated optical transceiver IC portfolio, strengthened optical transceiver IC market position, and state-of-the-art CMOS technology.

“Through this acquisition, Gennum has significantly strengthened our mixed-signal and optical product portfolio and added critical CMOS technology capability enabling our company to address a broader range of high growth networking markets such as Fiber to the Home, Ethernet and consumer optics,” said Dr. Franz Fink, President and Chief Executive Officer of Gennum. “We have listened to our customers’ needs to simplify the supply chain and can now provide them with one of the most complete optical transceiver ICs portfolios spanning all data rates. Indeed, we believe the Nanotech portfolio coupled with Gennum’s high speed mixed signal and optical portfolio will increase our ability to provide more, high value products resulting in increased growth opportunities for Gennum.”

Gennum Q1 2011 Revenue Increases 7 Percent

Broadcast technology vendor financials, Quarterly Results | Posted by Joe Zaller
Apr 07 2011

Gennum Corporation, a provider of semiconductors to the broadcast and digital media industries, announced that their first quarter revenue was C$31.5m, an increase of 7% versus the same period a year ago. Net income was C$4.6, an increase of 15% versus Q1 2010. Gross margins as a percentage of sales were a strong 72.5% in the quarter.

The company said the improved performance was driven by driven by higher revenue at similar gross margins, partially offset by higher operating expenses, primarily research and development.

.

Outlook and Impact of Japan Earthquake

Gennum provided guidance for the coming quarter, saying that its current order book for the second quarter is similar to the order book at the same time in the first quarter of 2011.

However, the company cautioned that it might be impacted by the recent earthquake in Japan.  “We are working closely with our customers, employees and partners in Japan to ensure they have the support needed to begin the rebuilding process. At this point, we have limited visibility on the long-term impact to our business and we are taking a cautious stance over the next few quarters. As such, we might experience some near-term impact to our business as customers bring production back online over the coming months.”

New Products at NAB 2011

Gennum is in the process of introducing a number of new products, which will be shown at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas next week.  These include optical transceivers, a Thunderbolt tranciever, and 3Gbps adaptive cable equalizers that are capable of driving signals up to 200 meters.
